The Hit of Xmas 2006: Sony Mylo

Okay, parents, rev up your Visas and prepare to lay ’em down to pick up at least one of these devices to make Christmas joyous for the young ‘uns.

Sony’s new Mylo device is guaranteed to be the must-have device of the holiday season. In fact, you’d best buy a few early and hide ’em in the closet because no amount of frantic rushing around on Christmas eve will turn one up then.

The Mylo – “My Life Online” – is Sony’s idea of a “personal communicator”. It’s a fairly large handheld device that can browse the web, send and receive email and text messages and play videos and music. What’s more, it can be used like a phone to place and receive Skype VOIP calls.

The unit has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a nice-sized colour LCD. Its memory can be upgraded with Sony’s MemoryStick media. The good news is that it isn’t too expensive. It’s likely going to retail for about $400 CDN.

Trust me on this one: the unit is going to be hot. Now if I can just get my hands on one to compose an objective review… any Sony PR folks out there reading?
