Summing Up the UBB Counter-Argument

Peter Nowak posted a solid counter-argument to the UBB issue on his blog this week, “10 myths from usage-based billing supporters“. It’s well worth a read in full, but I’ll also summarize his points here:

  • Data is not a utility
  • Delivery cost is paying for expansion
  • Congestion has not been proven
  • Investment is not making big ISPs poor
  • Heavy users are not all pirates
  • Pirates are not necessarily bad
  • Not all opponents of UBB are hogs
  • Market forces won’t take care of problems
  • Facilities-based competition is not the holy grail
  • Everyone else makes it work
